DAYLOG
The Shareware version of DayLog duplicates all functions of
the registered version of the program. After a trial period
of sixty days the program will stop the automatic updating
of your reminders. All files will remain intact for use with
the registered version. If you plan to continue using the
program, please print the registration form and send it with
the registration fee to the address on the form.
About DayLog- DayLog was written for the busy computer user
providing reminders in chronological order in both date and
time with automatic updating to provide a very efficient
format. Reminders are listed on the screen starting with the
current date. Ten reminders are displayed and the balance
may be viewed using Up/Down arrows. Four types of reminders
are maintained by the program as follows:
One Time Reminders-The one time reminder is deleted when the
reminder date has passed.
Annual Reminders-The annual reminder is automatically updated
to the same calendar date in the following year when the
reminder date is passed. This type of a reminder is
especially useful for birthdays, anniversaries and other
events which occur on the same date each year.
Monthly Reminders- This type of a reminder is automatically
updated to the same day of the week in the following
month.(ie If the original date is for the second Monday in
January, it will be updated to the second Monday of
February.)
Weekly Reminders- These reminders are updated to the same day
in the next week. This is most often useful for weekly
meetings, golf dates, weekly luncheons and the like.
If a reminder is completed early or is canceled this time, it
may be temporarily deleted. It will again be listed when its
current date has passed. Reminders may also be permanently
deleted when no longer useful.
Each reminder has one comment line which will be displayed on
the screen when the program is running; Associated with each
reminder are three additional lines which may be called with
a display routine. These are useful for adding comments and
or data such as addresses or phone numbers or comments which
should not casually appear on the screen for passers by to
see!
The program may be configured to modify screen colors, toggle
border motion, select 12 or 24 hour time format as well as
United States and European date formats..
Program operation is user friendly and for the most part it
is not necessary to use this documentation. It will however
provide detailed information for using some of the menu
functions. Many functions and menu selections implement the
mouse when that feature is useful to save time or effort.
Hardware requirements are minimal but the DOS `Date' function
must be operational for the program to properly function!
-II-
Installation-Installation of DayLog is very simple. The
program and it's supporting files must all be in one
directory and installing it in it's own subdirectory is
recommended. Manual installation then involves making a
subdirectory, changing to that subdirectory and copying all
the files to it. Along with the normal support files, an
INSTALL program has been provided to facilitate the
installation. To use Install, mount the distribution disk on
the A or B floppy drive, switch to that drive and type
INSTALL. Answer the several questions as they appear on the
screen and DayLog will be installed in a few moments.
The install program will also create a batch file in your
root directory so DayLog may be started from anywhere by
simply typing DayLog. Most users will probably want DayLog
to come up as soon as the computer is turned on and you may
want to add the call to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The
installation program will not change any of your computer
files. Users of WINDOWS may want to build a program item
pointing to the DayLog directory and place an icon in the
start up group.
-III-
The Data Screen-The data screen displays 10 reminders in date
and time order starting with reminders having the current
date. Those reminders having the current date will be
emphasized by blinking. You may choose any reminder for
further display or processing as discussed later in this
documentation by simply selecting that reminder with the
mouse.
Reminders beyond the tenth may be examined by using the
Up/Down arrows. Along with the date and time, a note is
displayed which indicates the purpose of the reminder. Also
shown is the current record number which may be used as part
of the reminder selection routine for some of the menu items.
If there is additional data on the three hidden lines, an
asterisk will appear at the end of the displayed note. The
remaining lines may be displayed using the Display/Edit
routine discussed below.
-IV-
The Main Menu-When the data is being displayed, you may press
Alt<M> to bring up the main menu. The following sections of
the documentation will discuss these menu items in the order
of the menu display. All of the menu choices may be aborted
using the <Esc> key.
Add a Reminder- Selecting this item guides you through the
data entry procedure necessary to establish a new reminder.
Only three items are absolutely necessary; One, the reminder
type; Two, the date; Three the prompt note. The time is
optional as are the three explanatory notes.
The entered date is checked to make sure it is valid. Any
irregularities result in a date error message with an
automatic return to the date input section.
Similarly, the Time entry format is determined by your choice
of 12 or 24 hour for mat during program configuration. The
entered time is checked to make sure you include an `A' for
morning and a `P' for afternoon if in the 12 hour time
format. The midnight hour is not accepted as a valid time
because of the date ambiguity!
Once these three options have been selected, you may
terminate the reminder input by pressing <End>. The new
reminder will be immediately sequenced and will be presented
on the screen when the data is next displayed.
Temporary Delete-This option allows deletion of a reminder
which has already been done or one which will be skipped in
this period. When temporarily deleted, a reminder will not
be displayed until the reminder date has been passed. At
that time, the date will updated and the reminder will again
become active.
Erase a Reminder-This function permanently erases a reminder
and frees the memory it required while it was functional.
The re minders will be listed and the reminder to be erased
is selected by entering the record number for that reminder.
Once erased, the data relating to it is cleared from the
sequence file but is still in the main data file until a new
reminder is added and it is overwritten. Until that time it
is possible to retrieve it by using the Sequence File Restore
discussed below.
Display/Edit A Reminder-When this menu item is selected, all
of the data related to the selected reminder is displayed and
you may select items to be edited using Up/Down arrows or the
mouse. The same checks and restrictions apply as with the
original entry. The edit function may be terminated at any
time by pressing <End> or using the button labeled File for
filing the edited result using the mouse. You may use the
<Esc> key or the Abort button to exit the routine if no data
is changed.
List Reminders-This menu function allows a larger number of
reminders to be listed at one time. Up/Down arrows allow
stepping through the data base. This routine is a simple
data list and is not intended as a substitute for the normal
Reminder display.
Print Reminders-This menu function will print reminders on
the system printer. A generic text only printer is all that
is required. Reminders will be listed in the same order as
in the List Reminder screen display.
Sequence File Restore-If the computer date function fails and
the wrong date is dis played on the screen, the reminder
files will be corrupted as soon as the program is started.
To avoid permanent loss of your data, exit the program,
correct the date, restart the program and run the Sequence
File Restore option. The sequence file will be restructured.
This problem is usually a sign of computer memory battery
nearing the end of its useful life. Since this battery is
normally charged when the computer is in operation, a
computer which has limited operating time may result in a
failure of this type.
Clear Data Base-Purging all of the current reminders is
normally only used to start over by getting rid of all
current reminder data. Most of the time it will only be used
to get rid of the fictitious reminders furnished with the
program. A suitable warning is presented to allow a last
minute change of heart. The program may also be started with
a clear slate by deleting the Reminder.Dat file and the
SeqFile.Dat file before starting the program. The DayLog.Cfg
file may be left intact unless you want to reconfigure the
program.
Reconfigure Program-The configuration routine allows you to
select colors for the border, the data screen format and the
data itself. In addition you may also decide whether or not
you wish to use the moving border and you may choose either
the twelve hour or twenty four hour time input format.
The configuration routine also allows you to choose between
United Sates date format and that used in most European
countries. If you plan to use European format then your
computer must return the current date in that format when you
use the DOS `Date' function. If your computer returns the
date in United States format, then you must include a
`Country' statement in your CONFIG.SYS file. See your DOS
manual for the necessary details.
If the configuration file (DAYLOG.CFG) is lost or corrupted,
the choices will revert to default values and it will be
necessary to run the configuration routine again.
Quit DayLog-This menu selection will exit DayLog and return
to DOS.
Menu Exit-This choice requires no further discussion. It
simply returns to the normal reminder display.
-V-
The Mini Menu-When the data is displayed, you may select a
data item using the mouse. This will result in the display
of a mini menu having the following choices: Temporary
Delete, Erase Permanently, Display/Edit, show Main Menu and
Close Menu. As with the main menu, selections may be made
using the first choice letter in either upper or lower case
or by using the mouse. These functions behave just as they
do from the main menu except the record to be acted on has
already been chosen by positioning the mouse.
OMBUDSMAN
This program is produced by a member of the Association of
Shareware professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that
the shareware principal works for you. If you are unable to
resolve a shareware related problem with a ASP member by
contacting the member directly, ASP may be able to help. The
ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem with
an ASP member, but does not provide technical support for
members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545
Grover Road, Muskegon, MI 49442 or send a Compuserve message
via Compuserve Mail to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536.
C & E Associates has chosen to use the Shareware concept to
distribute this program. This is good for us in that it
contains many of the costs associated with a retail sales
effort. It is good for you since it allows you to make an
intelligent buying decision by trying the program to make
sure it does what you want before you spend your money. It
does however bring with it a legal and moral commitment to
buy (Register) the program after you have tried it and found
it to be to your liking. The authors of Shareware receive NO
money from the distribution of their efforts until you, the
user, register it. If you believe the effort that goes into
writing a program such as this deserves the twenty dollar
registration fee then please register by sending your check
along with the form included at the end of this
documentation.
This evaluation copy of the DAYLOG program for shareware
distribution has all of the features of the registered
version and includes a set of sample files so you can try the
program features without wasting time entering data. Since
this is an evaluation copy of the registered program, and it
will enable you to evaluate the program for sixty days. At
the end of that time you will be informed that the evaluation
period has expired and reminders will no longer be updated.
Your data files will however be preserved to use with the
registered version should you choose to register it.
Registered users will receive the latest program version and
discounts on future revisions or upgrades at a nominal cost.
Program support will be provided to both nonregistered and
registered users using Compuserve Mail addressed to Edward J.
Panner, (72717,1612), or by U.S.Mail addressed to me at the
registration address.
Shareware
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial
software, and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a
few specific exceptions as stated below. The author
specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the
software, either to all or to a specific group.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software.
You should find software that suits your needs and
pocketbook, whether it's Commercial or Shareware. The
Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you
can try before you buy. And because the overhead is low,
prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money back
guarantee - if you don't use the product, you don't pay for
it. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try
software before buying it. If you try a Shareware program
and continue using it, you are expected to register.
DayLog is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
friends, but do not give it away altered or as part of
another program. The essence of "user-supported" software is
to provide personal computer users with quality software
without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for
programmers to continue to develop new products. If you find
this program useful and continue to use it after a reasonable
trial period, you must make a registration payment of $20.00
to C & E Associates
The registration fee will license one copy for use on any
one computer at any one time. You must treat this software
just like a book. An example is that this software may be
used by any number of people and may be freely moved from one
computer location to another, so long as there is no
possibility of it being used at one location while it's being
used at another. Just as a book cannot be read by two
different persons at the same time.
Anyone distributing DayLog for any kind of remuneration must
first contact C & E Associates at the address below for
authorization. This authorization will be automatically
granted to distributors recognized by the (ASP) as adhering
to its guidelines for shareware distributors, and such
distributors may begin offering DayLog immediately (However C
& E Associates must still be advised so that the distributor
can be kept up-to-date with the latest version.)
You are encouraged to pass a copy of DayLog along to your
friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register
their copy if they find that they can use it. All registered
users will receive a copy of the latest version of the
program.
The distribution of DayLog by shareware vendors and other
distributors of user supported software is hereby authorized.
DayLog is copyrighted software and is not placed in the
public domain but rather is entered in the Shareware market
so that potential users may insure that it meets their needs.
The registration fee for the program is a only $20.00 in
United States currency. Registered users will automatically
receive software support and notice of any program
enhancements. Any future new versions will be made available
to registered users for a nominal fee.
